The Wrong Drivers Can Crash Your Computer

HardwareChip

If you’re thinking of updating the drivers of your computer, you must do so very carefully. There are many drivers available and there’s only one that your hardware needs. When downloading drivers even from valid sources, you have to be very sure that you got the right ones. The wrong drivers can cause trouble for your computer.

Drivers are sets of program codes written in the machine language that the hardware understands. It is the code that makes a video card, sound card, or network card work seamlessly with the rest of your operating system. The drivers serve as the mediator of the software and the hardware parts of your computer. Drivers speak the languages of them both.

This is the reason why drivers can make your devices work. Now think what will happen if the wrong programs are fed into your computer. Surely, the hardware won’t be able to understand it at all. The least that can happen is that your device won’t work.

The worse case scenario, on the other hand, is when the wrong driver crashes your computer. This could happen for devices that are crucial to make your whole computer system run. Such devices are the motherboard, processor, and memory. In some cases, the video drivers are as important as these three because they would cause the monitor display not to work, leaving the entire system almost useless.

When updating drivers for crucial devices, you have to be doubly sure of the files that you are downloading. You have to get the ones that are provided by your computer manufacturer if you haven’t changed anything inside your computer yet. In case you have replaced your computer’s motherboard, you have to rely on the CD that came with your purchase and install those drivers.

Sometimes, even the simplest drivers could make your computer not to start up properly. When a driver gets into conflict with another device, the system freezes and would cease to function. Drivers use up a certain portion of the computer’s memory to process its requests. When two or more devices use the same interrupt request, a problem will arise with the system.

Your operating system is tasked to keep the drivers in the right places so that the hardware becomes usable. However, it is your responsibility to make sure that the latest drivers are uploaded into your computer system. The newer drivers would assure faster processes and better efficiency performance for your PC.
