Why You Should Update Your Printer Drivers

PrinterPictureIf you have bought a printer for home use, you must be thinking of printing lots of pictures with it. If you have one in your home office, then it must be used primarily for printing documents, forms, and contracts. Whatever the reason you have for getting a printer, there’s only one thing that you should remember when using it – you must update its drivers from time to time.

Printer drivers need updating because they are frequently used. Not only that – they are the ones most neglected during the automatic software update. This is because of the fact that it is not residing inside the computer but is connected outside of it. When Windows run automatic updates for your computer, it normally detects what devices are currently installed. More often than not, your printer is turned off when Windows does its detection process. As such, you’ll end up with no updated drivers downloaded for your printer.

Printer drivers are not so hard to update. You just have to visit the original device manufacturer and download any updated drivers available from them. Make sure that you download the drivers that are specifically created for your printer. The wrong ones could make your printer work erroneously. Or worse, it could crash your entire operating system.

Printer manufacturers write updated drivers for their products to ensure smooth operation all the time. They tweak one or two features of the drivers so that it would work harmoniously with any platform of your choice. Many printers can work with almost all types of computer operating systems. While all of them are compatible with Windows, Linux and Macintosh are supported as well.

Windows usually apply service pack updates on their software as well. If you have recently updated from one service pack to another, it is best that you update your printer drivers along with it. Service packs update registry entries and a lot of critical settings in your computer. Some printers don’t work well with a new service pack unless the drivers are duly updated.

Be wary with your printer’s performance just in case you want to update anything about your operating system. The same is true for instances when you want to fully upgrade your platform, say from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Do the same thing if you wish to migrate from one operating system to another, such as Linux from Windows or vice versa.
